What can I drive?
Drivers who passed their category B (car) driving test before 1997 have grandfather rights and can drive a 7.5-tonne truck without taking another test. They will have the C1 entitlement on their licence, which covers vehicles from 3.5 to 7.5 tonnes GVW. However, drivers who passed their car driving test from 1 January 1997 will have to take a separate C1 test in order to drive any vehicle weighing in excess of 3.5 tonnes.
What payload do I need?
Payload considerations are critical when choosing a horsebox. These include the number of horses and people, the amount of tack, water and feed, fuel, etc. Vehicles that are overweight are not only illegal to drive and may invalidate your insurance and may also compromise safety.
I have 2 horses can I have a 3.5-tonne vehicle?
This depends on the weight of the horses an the amount of tack, feed, etc. Unless they are small it is unlikely that a 3.5-tonne vehicle will offer enough payload. Please contact us to discuss other options available.
What is a structural bulkhead?
This is the frame/wall that separates the horse area and cab. At John Oates, the heavy-duty frame is tied into both the cab and the body.
What colours can I choose?
We a huge array of colours available to suit your personal preference from a single solid colour to multiple metallic colours.
Do I have to pay VAT?
As we are a VAT registered business all prices attract VAT.
How long does a horsebox take to build?
Once the chassis has been sourced it will take 8-10 weeks to complete the horsebox.
Do you have a waiting list?
Our waiting list varies depending on current demand and workload. It is usually between 2-4 weeks but please contact us for up to date information. Our stock vehicles are available immediately.
Can I have my existing horsebox repainted?
Yes! Please contact us so we may discuss the options available and provide a quotation.
Can I have my horsebox repaired?
Yes! Please contact us so we may assess the work required and provide a quotation.
Can I have my horsebox serviced?
Yes! As expert builders of horsebox we have the knowledge and skill to repair your horsebox correctly and get it back on the road as quickly as possible. Please contact us so we can assess the work required.
What is a horsebox health check?
We want your horsebox to provide you with an enjoyable and reliable service. We offer a horsebox health check where we assess the wear and tear of the horsebox and advise any areas that may need repairing or replacing.
Do you MOT horseboxes?
Yes, we can arrange for an MOT to be carried out. Most customers arrange this alongside a general service and health check.
Do you manufacture the body or just assemble it?
At John Oates we engineer, design and build your horsebox at our factory. This allows us to control the build quality to ensure you have a horsebox that is reliable, robust and lightweight. Come and take a tour of a factory to see how we build horseboxes.
Do you accept trade-ins?
Yes, we do although we would want to inspect your horsebox before we agree with a trade-in value.
Do you offer finance?
Yes, we can offer various finance arrangements. Please contact us for details.
Do you want a deposit to secure an order?
If we are supplying the donor vehicle we ask for a £6,000 incl. VAT deposit to secure the order.
If you are supplying your own donor vehicle we ask for a £1,200 incl. VAT deposit to secure the order.
Any outstanding balance is to paid prior to handover of the horsebox.
Do you deliver?
Yes - we can deliver your horsebox but prefer to handover at our business so we can take you through our handover process so you are familiar with the operation of the vehicle and horsebox.
